San Francisco 49ers Owner Got Suspended

San Francisco 49ers

The NFL has fined San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York $500,000 and suspended him for six regular-season games for violating its personal conduct policy. The league announced the discipline on Friday, October 2, ending a review that began after York’s arrest in Ohio this summer.

The arrest

In late August, the 46-year-old York was arrested in Ohio after responding to a fictitious ad on a prostitution website. The arrest took place in East Palestine. Authorities said he responded to an undercover advertisement and agreed to pay for sexual activity. York reportedly agreed to one hour of “full service sexual activity” for $160, and was stopped by police after he couldn’t find the made-up lot number. He reportedly used a pseudonym when trying to arrange the encounter.

The legal outcome

York was initially charged with soliciting prostitution. Prosecutors later amended the charge to disorderly conduct under a plea agreement. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges on August 24. He received a sentence of two days in the Columbiana County Jail and had to pay a $1,150 fine.

The league’s decision

The NFL concluded York had violated its personal conduct policy. Because he had already stayed away from the team, he has largely served the suspension. York missed the first three games of the 2026 season, along with league meetings, and the league is counting those games toward the six-game ban.

Reports differ slightly on the exact end date. One outlet reports he can return on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with the first game after the suspension being the Week 7 road matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 25. After a bye following that trip, the first home game he can attend is against the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 8. Another report says the suspension runs through San Francisco’s Oct. 19 game against the Commanders, which is consistent with a return the next day.

The penalty has a precedent. It matches the $500,000 fine and six-game suspension given to the late Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay after he pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated in 2014.

York’s response

York did not contest the decision. His statement read, in part: “This was an inexcusable mistake, and I take full responsibility.” He apologized to his family, the team, and fans, and addressed his children, saying he had fallen short of the example he wanted to set for his sons. Despite the statement, he has not answered questions in person about the incident.

Practical impact

For the team, the effect is limited. Since York has been away since the start of the season, the suspension changes little for the 49ers’ day-to-day operations. York became the team’s CEO in 2008 and its principal owner in 2024, and the franchise has made three Super Bowl appearances under his leadership.

The timing adds a personal strain. The arrest came months after York filed for divorce from his wife, Danielle Belluomini.
