Jaylen Reed Will Miss The Rest Of The Season

The Packers will go the rest of 2026 without one of their most versatile playmakers. Coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that wide receiver Jayden Reed will need neck surgery, which ends his season. Reed is being placed on injured reserve.

A frightening moment in New Jersey

The injury happened in Week 2 against the New York Jets. Reed was carted off in the first quarter of an overtime road win. They placed him on a backboard with his head stabilized before moving him to a cart. He stayed overnight in a New Jersey hospital rather than flying home with the team. There were early signs of encouragement. Reed later posted on Instagram that he was doing much better, and he had movement in his extremities.

Not believed to be career-ending

LaFleur confirmed the long-term outlook Wednesday. Reed will be out for “a significant amount of time,” but the injury isn’t believed to be a career-ender for the 26-year-old. On Instagram, Reed wrote a message of faith and signed off with “11 out,” a reference to his jersey number.

Another setback

It is the latest in a run of injuries for Reed. Last season he needed surgery to repair a broken clavicle and a Jones fracture in his foot. His 2026 season had barely started. He caught three passes on seven targets for 20 yards in the season opener against Minnesota. His best full season came in 2024, when he put up more than 1,000 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns.

The timing is especially hard for the team and player. In April, the Packers signed Reed to a three-year contract extension worth $50.25 million.

Who steps up

Reed lined up in many roles, and LaFleur said no single player will replace his production. LaFleur said other players will have to step up and that the work will be done by committee. Expect more snaps for the rest of Green Bay’s receiving group, and likely a heavier workload for the running backs and tight ends as well.

For now, the focus is on Reed’s surgery and recovery. The Packers will have to win without him, but the team hopes he returns in 2027.
