Gabriel Jesus is on the verge of a new chapter in his career. Barcelona and Arsenal have reached a deal in principle that will send the Brazilian forward to Camp Nou for a fee of £8.6 million (around €10 million), with both clubs now finalizing the finer points of the transfer and Jesus set to travel to Spain to complete his move.
Jesus’s departure from Arsenal has been in the making for weeks. He fell down the pecking order in north London well before this transfer materialized: he was left out of the matchday squad for the Community Shield against Manchester City and missed out again for the Premier League opener against Coventry City, signs that he was no longer part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for the season.
That slide in status set off a scramble of interest across Europe. Napoli had been circling for weeks, with Corriere dello Sport describing the Brazilian as the Serie A club’s top striker target as the window neared its close. Atlético Madrid had also been mentioned as a possible landing spot, reportedly eyeing Jesus as insurance should Julián Álvarez leave the club. Even a swap deal involving Arsenal teammate Gabriel Martinelli had been floated as one possible mechanism to get a Jesus transfer over the line.
Barcelona’s interest, though, is far from new. The Catalan club had been strongly linked with Jesus for over a year as part of their broader search for attacking depth following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, and reports throughout the summer pointed to Barça as one of several suitors monitoring his situation as his Arsenal career wound down.
The £8.6 million fee represents a steep drop from the roughly £45 million Arsenal paid Manchester City to sign Jesus back in 2022. That decline reflects a combination of factors: Jesus entered the final year of his Arsenal contract, his role at the club had diminished, and a serious ACL injury sidelined him for a large stretch of the previous season. Reports throughout August had pegged Arsenal’s asking price in the range of €15–20 million, making the eventual fee a further discount on those already-reduced expectations.
As part of the same swirl of transfer activity, Arsenal have also agreed to sell midfielder Fábio Vieira to Hamburg in a deal worth around £7.7 million.
For Barcelona, adding Jesus gives Hansi Flick another experienced attacking option with Premier League and Champions League pedigree, someone who can offer rotation and versatility across the front line. At 29, he arrives with plenty still to prove after a difficult run of injuries and diminishing minutes, but a move to a fresh environment—and a club he has long expressed admiration for—could offer him the reset he needs.
The move is still being finalized, with medical and administrative details expected to follow in the coming days.
