João Cancelo’s Return to Barcelona: Transfer Insights

João Cancelo

João Cancelo‘s long, winding relationship with FC Barcelona looks set to reach its final chapter. The Portuguese full-back is now closing in on a permanent return to Catalonia from Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal.

Cancelo’s Barcelona story has already had several twists. His original loan spell from Manchester City ran through the 2023-24 season, ending without a permanent option attached. From there, he moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Hilal, but the relationship between player and club soured. In January 2026, Barcelona brought him back for a second loan spell.

That second stint proved decisive. Playing under Hansi Flick, Cancelo showed off his versatility, playing on either side of the defense as well as providing an attacking option. That impressed Barcelona’s hierarchy that a permanent deal was worth pursuing.

Talks between Barcelona and Al-Hilal have run for much of the 2026 summer transfer window. Initially, reports in early August pointed to an “imminent” agreement worth around €10 million. However, recent reports say that Al-Hilal’s demands had crept up toward €15 million. Whatever the case, Cancelo has been training away from Al-Hilal by mutual agreement as his exit was finalized.

Cancelo himself has fueled the growing sense of inevitability. He recently posted an image on social media showing himself from behind in a Barcelona shirt alongside an hourglass emoji. It was a not-too-subtle signal that his return to Camp Nou is a matter of when, not if.

As of mid-August 2026, reports say the move is entering its “final stages,” with an official breakthrough expected within days. Once the paperwork with Al-Hilal is completed, Barcelona are expected to schedule a medical and formally unveil the 32-year-old at Camp Nou.

At 32, Cancelo arrives with a résumé most defenders would envy. He has spells at Benfica, Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona. Known for his hybrid full-back play, equally comfortable overlapping down the flank or tucking into midfield. He also gives Flick a versatile, experienced option as Barcelona look to defend their La Liga title and push further in Europe this season.

It’ll be interesting to see what Cancelo looks like with Barcelona. He has been one of the best full-backs in the world at times, so if he can return to that form, it could make a major difference for Barcelona, who have been cycling through short-term fixes.
