With just over 24 hours to go before their season opener against the Miami Dolphins, the Las Vegas Raiders made sure Michael Mayer wouldn’t be playing out the final year of his rookie deal without security. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the team announced a three-year contract extension for its fourth-year tight end, a deal worth up to $45 million with $30 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Numbers
The extension carries a $15 million average annual value, which ranks among the top five tight end salaries in the league. Mayer also receives a $9 million signing bonus, and $22.5 million of the deal is fully guaranteed at signing. Combined with the remaining year of his rookie contract, the new agreement creates a four-year, roughly $47 million package through the 2029 season, with a 2028 base salary of $11.735 million that becomes fully guaranteed in March 2027.
The timing stands out: Mayer signed the extension a full year before he was set to hit free agency, and just as he’s being thrust into a starting role. Raiders tight end Brock Bowers is sidelined to open the season after undergoing a meniscus trim, meaning Mayer will start Week 1 against the Dolphins.
Why Now
On paper, Mayer’s numbers don’t scream “breakout star.” Across his first three NFL seasons, the 2023 second-round pick out of Notre Dame has totaled 83 receptions for 788 yards and three touchdowns over 38 games, missing 10 games to injury along the way. He’s played for four different head coaches since being drafted.
But the Raiders clearly see something worth paying for beyond the box score. Mayer has shown he can produce when given the opportunity — in 2025, with Bowers out for five games due to a knee injury, Mayer stepped in for four of those and posted 18 catches for 196 yards and a touchdown, well above his usual per-game output. He finished last season with career highs in both receptions (35) and receiving yards (328).
New head coach Klint Kubiak, building an offense around rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza (with Kirk Cousins also in the mix), values having two reliable tight ends on the field. Mayer’s blocking ability adds a dimension the Raiders can lean on in the run game, which should benefit running back Ashton Jeanty as well.
Mayer, for his part, framed the extension as validation of a mutual commitment. “I love this place,” he told Raiders.com. “I show loyalty to the Raiders, but the Raiders have also shown loyalty to me. I think that’s how the world goes around.”
What It Means Going Forward
The deal secures Mayer as Las Vegas’s second tight end for the foreseeable future, pairing him long-term with Bowers, the Raiders’ 2024 first-round pick and one of the league’s top young tight ends. It also sets an early marker for the market: with Bowers extension talks expected as soon as next offseason, and given how far tight end salaries have climbed, Bowers could be in line for a deal in the $25 million-per-year range or higher.
For now, though, the spotlight is on Mayer, who opens the 2026 season as the Raiders’ starter and gets an immediate chance to prove the extension was worth the money.
