Rafael Leao’s long-rumored departure from AC Milan is finally coming to fruition, with the Portuguese winger set to complete a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. After months of speculation, a saga that dragged on since Leao publicly expressed his desire to leave Milan in late May has reached its conclusion.
The two clubs verbally settled on terms on August 26, with figures in circulation ranging from roughly €40 million to €45 million as a base fee, plus performance bonuses that could push the total package toward €50 million. Some reports also describe Milan retaining a resale percentage — as high as 20% in one account — on any future sale of the player.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move with his trademark “here we go,” signaling the transfer had reached its final stages.
Leao is reportedly in line for around €12 million per year on a four-year deal, which by some accounts would keep him at the club through 2030. It’s a significant financial commitment for a Turkish club, even one with Galatasaray’s revenue base, and it reportedly edged out a competing offer.
The move wasn’t a foregone conclusion. Aston Villa had been pushing hard to sign the winger, reportedly offering a substantial net salary of their own. According to reports, Leao leaned toward accepting the Premier League club’s offer earlier in the day before changing his mind and committing to Galatasaray instead. Reporting suggests better overall terms and the appeal of the city played a role in tipping the decision toward Istanbul.
Reports out of Italy indicate that Victor Osimhen, already at Galatasaray, personally lobbied his fellow attacker to make the move, dangling the idea of teaming up together for the coming season. The club reportedly treated Leao as a top target for the closing days of the window and used Osimhen’s relationship with him as part of the pitch.
Leao’s exit had been signaled for some time. Milan boss Ruben Amorim addressed the situation ahead of a match against Venezia, acknowledging that sometimes a player needs a change of scenery even when talented enough to play anywhere in the world.
The winger leaves Milan after seven seasons, during which he became one of Serie A’s most electric attacking players. His departure marks the end of an era at San Siro and represents one of the biggest transfers in the history of Turkish football.
With personal terms reportedly being finalized, attention now turns to the medical and official announcement. Reports indicate travel plans were already being arranged to bring Leao to Istanbul, with Galatasaray fans eager to see their marquee signing arrive.
