Aston Villa are closing in on a deal to sign Germany international Leon Goretzka. The midfielder has reached a verbal agreement with the club following a direct call between the player and manager Unai Emery.
Goretzka became a free agent after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of his contract, having spent eight seasons with the Bundesliga club. His trophy haul in Munich is substantial. It includes seven league titles, three German Cups, four Super Cups, and a Champions League.
The signing addresses a pressing need in midfield. Villa have been searching for reinforcements after losing Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. They also saw Amadou Onana ruled out for a large part of the season with a serious knee injury sustained playing for Belgium against the USA at the World Cup. Villa have also seen Lucas Digne, Morgan Rogers, and Ezri Konsa depart the club this summer.
Goretzka joins a busy midfield rebuild that has already brought in Johan Manzambi for £52 million and João Gomes for £38 million. However, Villa reportedly missed out on their earlier target João Palhinha before turning to the German.
As a free agent, Villa avoid paying any transfer fee, but the personal terms are said to be significant. Salary demands are around €7 million net per year, with a potential €10 million signing bonus. The overall package still represents a lower cost than buying a comparable player on the open market. That fits with Villa’s broader approach of prioritizing experienced, low-fee signings over big-money headline deals.
Tactically, Goretzka offers Emery a versatile option. He can play alongside a defensive midfielder, operate in a double pivot, or push forward and join attacks, while using his physicality, box-to-box running, and trademark late runs into the box.
It’ll be interesting to see what Goretzka is able to do with Villa. He will be able to isntnatly step into the midfield and provide value. Now with Villa playing in the champions league he will be able to bring valueable expereince as well.
