Vita Vea is staying in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers and their two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle agreed to a one-year, $30 million contract extension after a trade request.
Vea entered the final year of the four-year, $71 million extension he signed in January 2022. He was set to earn a $17 million base salary in 2026. Now the 31-year-old anchor of Tampa’s defensive line is under contract through the 2027 season.
The deal adds $6 million in new money to the $18 million Vea was already owed in 2026, bringing this season’s total to $24 million, with an additional $24 million coming in 2027. That works out to roughly $24 million per year across the two remaining seasons.
Contract talks stalled during the offseason, and Vea skipped participation in the team’s mandatory June minicamp before officially requesting a trade after extension talks broke down. As camp opened, Vea entered a “hold-in” as he waited to resolve his contract situation.
The extension makes Vea the fifth highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the NFL. However, for the Buccaneers, the money is worth it. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler who has played in 112 career games and racked up 256 tackles, 35 sacks, and 79 quarterback hits. He also played a key role in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV championship run.
The move also fits a broader pattern for Tampa Bay’s front office. Buccaneers GM Jason Licht has made a habit of investing in homegrown talent rather than letting cornerstone pieces walk, and the Vea extension continues that trend of retaining and rewarding players who came up through the organization.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Buccaneers look like this season. They have the talent to be successful, and in the NFC South, anything is possible. If Vea can continue to be an interior presence, their defense can help them win games and potentially the division.
