Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Parma to sign Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, moving quickly to seal a deal after his proposed transfer to Paris Saint-Germain fell through.
When it comes to the money, Aston Villa has agreed to a fee in the region of €35m with add-ons for the 23-year-old, who turns 24 later this month. Additionally, Suzuki is expected to sign a long-term contract with the Midlands club, reportedly running through to 2031.
How This Happened
This agreement comes after Suzuki’s switch to European champions PSG collapsed over the weekend. PSG had reportedly raised their offer for Suzuki to around €35 million. They restructured the package to front-load more of the fee rather than leaving it contingent on add-ons and bonuses. Parma had agreed to those terms, and Suzuki was expected to travel to Paris for a medical and to sign his contract.
However, the European champions withdrew from the deal after a dispute over transfer commissions demanded by the goalkeeper’s representatives. That left Suzuki to seek out other options as the transfer window wound down. He reportedly made his preference to join the Premier League club clear, and Aston Villa capitalized.
Who Is Zion Suzuki?
Suzuki was born in Newark, New Jersey, to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother. He came through Urawa Red Diamonds, winning the Emperor’s Cup in 2021 and the AFC Champions League and Japanese Super Cup in 2022. He joined Parma from Sint-Truiden (via Urawa Red Diamonds) in 2024 and made 57 Serie A appearances over the past two seasons.
On the international stage, he’s represented Japan from the U15 level up, made one appearance for the Olympic team, and has 28 senior caps. Suzuki has established himself as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper. He started all four of Japan’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team was eliminated by Brazil in the round of 32.
What This Means
For Aston Villa, this move is closely tied to uncertainty over Emiliano Martinez‘s future at Villa Park. Juventus has made several bids for the Argentine goalkeeper, but nothing has materialized. This move allows Villa to move on from Martinez without facing any consequences. It also secures their future as Suzuki is entering his prime years.
For PSG, this move wasn’t a must-have. They have Matvei Safonov and Lucas Chevalier, who are both extremly capable players. Suzuki would’ve been a long-term project for them. Now they will simply have to figure out who will be starting next season.
The most likely result if this deal had gone through was that Suzuki was going on loan to Juventus. That means that Juventus is ultimately getting the short end of the stick here. Suzuki would’ve been a bridge goalkeeper for them while they figure things out for next year.
It’ll be interesting to see what Suzuki looks like with Aston Villa this season. They will be playing in the Champions League, so Suzuki has the chance to have a major impact on a team that will be playing at the highest level of European competition.
