Knicks Re-Sign Landry Shamet: A Smart Move for Championship Continuity

Landry Shamet

The New York Knicks are keeping one of the most improtant pieces of their championship run. They agreed to a four-year $24 million deal with Landry Shamet

The Knicks won the championship for the first time in 53 years. They were led by their second chance points and tenacity. However, their guard play was another dirivng factor for them. That was because in the new offense installed by head coach Mike Brown everything is initiated by the guards.

During the regular season for the Knicks, Shamet averaged 9.3 points per game while shooting 45.3% from the field. However, he imapcted the game outisde of the box score as a dependable perimeter defender and floor spacer. In the post season is when Shamet truly showed off his capabilitites. He appeared in every playoff game and connected on an impressive 47.5% of his three-point attempts.

Shamet is going to be able to continue to make big shots for the Knicks next season. He will be empowered coming off his playoff perfromance. That means that the Knicks are going to have a veteran shooter coming off the bench who can role with the starting unit when needed.

This move highlights the Knicks commitment to maintaining roster stability despite looming salary cap concerns. The Knicks entered the offseason facing difficult financial decisions as they attempted to remain below the league’s restrictive second apron while still retaining key contributors. Because of that getting Shamet, who was a top priority, for an average of $6 million per year is a great move for them.

The Knicks are clearly intent on repeating as champions next season. Keeping players that were key contributors is the best way to do that which is why they have resigned Shamet. Now, they have a clear runway to make another deep run in the Eastern Conference next season.
