The Boston Celtics are boosting their frontcourt. They have agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract extension with center Neemias Queta after exercising his team option for the 2026-27 season.
How We Got Here:
Coming into the season, there were several questions surrounding the Celtics’ big man rotation. In what was considered by many a “gap year,” having a mediocre center rotation seemed like a fine move because, in the end, it wouldn’t really matter if they played well or not. However, the group performed much better than expected, allowing the Celtics to finish second in the Eastern Conference before getting exposed against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Queta himself has had an interesting journey to this point. He was selected in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings and struggled to find a consistent role early in his career. He joined the Celtics on a two-way contract in 2023, where he steadily earned the trust of the coaching staff through his energy, physicality, and rim protection.
Last season marked a breakout campaign for the 7-footer. Queta developed into a reliable starting-caliber center, averaging career highs across the board. He provided the Celtics with efficient scoring around the basket, strong rebounding, and an imposing defensive presence. His ability to finish in the paint, protect the rim, and control the glass made him one of Boston’s most important interior players.
His Impact:
Queta will be able to provide key play at the center position. It was clear throughout the playoffs that having a good center is crucial to winning. Queta showed signs of improvement across the board last season. Therefore, if he continues on that path, he will make a major impact for the Celtics.
The Celtics have gone through some major roster changes, so having continuity at a key position will help. He will be under contract for the next four years, but the price isn’t extraordinary. If he continues to improve, then it could quickly turn into a bargain. Additionally, it allows the Celtics to go out and bring in more help in free agency.
The Celtics are looking to stay in the Eastern Conference title race, and this move allows them to do just that. By keeping a young, improving center, they are giving themselves continuity and stability at a much-needed position. Now all Queta has to do is continue to improve and take steps forward.
