Sandro Tonali Joins Tottenham: A £100M Transfer Analysis

Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur have made one of the biggest statements of the 2026 summer transfer window. They have agreed to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record deal reportedly worth up to £100 million.

Tonali originally came to England from AC Milan in 2023 for a then club-record fee. However, he received a 10-month suspension for breaches of Italian betting regulations. That suspension sidelined him for much of his first season in England. However, he came back and instantly re-established himself as one of Newcastle’s most influential players. With his help, the Magpies won the Carabao Cup in 2025.

Tottenham, on the other hand, is coming off one of their worst seasons in recent history. They were in a battle to save themselves from relegation all season and barely survived by two points. Because of that, they brought in Roberto De Zerbi to be their new manager.

The combination of De Zerbi and Tonali is a glove-and-hand fit. This is because De Zerbi places enormous importance on midfield control and Tonali can do just that. He is known for his exceptional passing range, relentless work rate, defensive intelligence, and composure under pressure.

The fact that Tonali came with a £100 million price tag means that there will be pressure for him to perform right off the bat. Fans will be expecting him to elevate the team back toward the top of the table where they have been for the majority of the 21st century. He, along with the growing list of arrivals in the summer transfer window, will have their work cut out for them.

This is a major move for Tottenham after they narrowly avoided relegation. They’ll now have to prove that he was worth the money and bounce back from what can only be described as an disappointing season.
